Automation & Integration

What is IntegrationHub in ServiceNow?

IntegrationHub extends Flow Designer so flows can work with other systems, such as Microsoft Teams, Slack, Active Directory, Jira or cloud platforms, using prebuilt connectors instead of custom code.

Spokes

A spoke is a package of ready-made actions for one system. The Microsoft Entra ID spoke, for example, includes actions like Create User and Add User to Group. Spokes are installed from the ServiceNow Store and then appear in Flow Designer like any other action.

Integration steps

When no spoke exists, you can build custom actions with integration steps such as REST, SOAP, PowerShell, SSH and JDBC. These let you connect to almost any system, including on-premise ones through a MID Server.

A practical example

When a Service Catalog request for software access is approved, a flow uses the Active Directory spoke to add the user to the right group, then the Microsoft Teams spoke to send them a message that access is ready. No one has to touch the request manually.

Licensing

Basic spokes and features are included with many subscriptions, while advanced spokes and integration steps require higher IntegrationHub tiers. Usage may also be measured in transactions. Check your entitlements before designing an integration around a specific spoke.

Best practices

Use connection and credential aliases so the same flow works in development, test and production with different credentials. Handle errors explicitly in flows so failed calls create a task or alert instead of failing silently. Prefer existing spokes over custom REST actions when they cover your needs.

Frequently asked questions

Is IntegrationHub the same as the REST API?

No. The REST API lets other systems call ServiceNow. IntegrationHub lets ServiceNow call other systems from flows.

Can IntegrationHub reach systems inside our network?

Yes, by routing the calls through a MID Server installed inside your network.

Do I need IntegrationHub for every integration?

No. Scripted integrations and import sets still work, but IntegrationHub is usually easier to build and maintain.
