What is Update Set in ServiceNow?

An update set is a container that records configuration changes on one ServiceNow instance so they can be moved to another, typically from development to test to production.

What update sets capture

When you make a change while an update set is selected, ServiceNow records it as a customer update. Update sets capture configuration, such as business rules, client scripts, forms, lists, ACLs and flows. They do not capture regular data like incidents, users or groups, unless you add those records manually.

Moving changes between instances

On the target instance, you retrieve the completed update set from the source instance, preview it to detect conflicts or missing dependencies, resolve any issues, and commit it. Batching lets you group several related update sets so they are previewed and committed together in the right order.

Update sets and scoped apps

Changes are captured per application scope, so each scope has its own update sets. For larger custom applications, many teams move apps through the application repository or source control instead of update sets.

Best practices

Always check which update set is selected before you start working, and never build directly in the Default update set. Keep update sets small and focused on one story or fix. Give them clear names, such as a story number. Preview carefully in test before committing to production.

Common mistakes

Forgetting to add data that a change depends on, like a new group or system property value, is the most common reason a change works in development but fails in production. Editing the same record in several update sets can overwrite newer changes with older ones.

Frequently asked questions

Why isn’t my change in the update set?

Either a different update set was selected, the change was made in another scope, or the record type isn’t tracked automatically, like most data records.

Can I undo a committed update set?

Sometimes. Committed update sets can be backed out, but this doesn’t always restore everything cleanly, so test in a non-production instance first.

What is the Default update set?

The update set used when nothing else is selected. Changes there are hard to track and move, so avoid it for development work.
